High AFP, Preeclampsia Fears, and a Birth Plan That Changed: Karen’s Story

Karen’s pregnancy was a surprise she quickly embraced. Although she had dreamed of a home birth, a high alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) result and fears about preeclampsia—especially given her family history—shook her confidence. After feeling pressured by her midwife, Karen switched to an OB and planned a scheduled C-section. With compassionate guidance, her OB helped her better understand the risks of surgery, especially for future pregnancies, and gave her the confidence to aim for a vaginal birth. Karen went on to have a natural delivery with an epidural and a positive hospital experience. In this episode, she shares her journey through fear, shifting plans, and unexpected challenges—especially how breastfeeding and postpartum recovery became the hardest parts she wishes were talked about more.
